CITES electronic Non-Detriment finding (e-NDF) portal for sharks and rays

About

This electronic Non-Detriment Finding (e-NDF) serves as an online tool to facilitate the development of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) Non-Detriment Findings (NDF) for species listed on CITES Appendix II

At present this portal provides access to an NDF template (with guidance support) for shark and ray species. It will soon be expanded to cover more taxa of flora and fauna (e.g., by the end of 2023, the sea cucumber e-NDF will be available).

This software can also be used as a tool to inform management and conservation of non-CITES listed species.

A short demonstration of key features of this software is available at: http://y2u.be/yMvLpnR1COA

Data Security

Online Version:

The online browser version of the e-NDF software is built with industry standard data protection protocols.

Once a CITES Party (or Observer) obtains an Administrator login (with ADMIN login rights), they are able to add users and NDF templates into their portal. Designated users will only receive access as authorised by the respective admin and could be further restricted to particular NDF(s) or subsection(s) of an NDF, and could either have edit and view access, or view-only access.

An Administrator only has access to their own portal on the software server. They are unable to view, or access, portals allocated to other Administrators (i.e., other CITES Parties and/or Observers). Software developers and server hosts are also unable to view, or access, any portals or NDF’s stored on the server.

Offline (Server) Version:

For CITES Parties that are unable to use the secure online browser version due to national security concerns, it is possible to install the e-NDF software on any server of their choice (including national servers) to ensure absolute isolation of the software.

Please contact eNDF@blueresources.org to obtain instructions and a copy of the e-NDF software for installation (we recommend that the respective national IT support team reach out as it requires technical understanding of server installations)

Partners and funders

This e-NDF for sharks and rays was developed by Blue Resources Trust to support CITES Parties in their implementation of shark and ray listings.

We also acknowledge our partners Sharkipedia, and MarAlliance.

Development of this software was possible thanks to the generous support from The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (Bundesamt für Naturschutz, BfN) of the Government of Germany, and also from the Shark Conservation Fund.
